What happens teaching English overseas
The sad and the good
Good:
- New exciting life : You are a teacher helping student learn and live
- New surroundings : Vietnamese culture and expectations and a bit limited
Bad:
- Limited : Roads and infrastructure is not there as the established building would need to be torn down. Might take years or decades to remodel or never. Good high speed internet and cell phone service but cables are everywhere strewn outside. This is just a SEA thing and you get used to it.
- Vietnamese from Vietnam teachers : expect you to be an expert – In America, you should have done customer service since high school and studied really hard to come back to Vietnam to teach. No win situation. Teachers there expect you to be grammar fluent and dictionary all at once. Astronomical demands. You better love learning and never give up.
- Field : If you never had a passion in life, you are screwed door knob. You have to have variety and personality to win over students and everyone.

During my stint teaching twice … some of the kids looked at my dark side (Vietnamese life of ego)
They were unhappy seeing me, a 30+ year old Vietnamese who is tall, with no problems, from Canada teaching English for $10 a day.
Children from Vietnam want to see a Vietnamese guy born in North America batting it in Fortune 10 companies as both CEO and CFO. Fin.
How high do immigrants want life? You know!
