My experience with programming at university

PREVIOUS: My experiences with programming when I was younger

I did a few computer courses at university. I passed them but they were beginner courses or created for biology and chemistry students to try computer science.

When I took a real computer science course in 2nd semester, I was overwhelmed by the theory and abstract thinking.

I thought I had enough experience with computers but sadly I found myself dropping out.

The other computer science students were real ‘computer people’ when I compared myself to them. I just had some beginner computer knowledge.

I could not dedicate myself to learn and do all the assignments and study. I was distraught that I could not concentrate and do the work. I hit a wall.

I left and went to work thinking I could not do computer science.

UPDATE 2026: I was still young and unsocialized and did not understand people here in Canada or people in general. You have to understand people are just trying to survive and live at the end of the day. Competition in school or unhelpful people during university is normal. People hate and try to hurt others based on personal ego. But real life starts 5 – 10 years after university when you are faced if you want to work for ‘X company’ for the rest of your life or work for yourself.
